Since October 10, a new state-certified security label has been introduced for Toscano IGP Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO), marking an upgrade in how authenticity and traceability are displayed to consumers.
As global buyers grow ever more wary of food fraud, Tuscany’s olive-oil producers are embracing the new label, issued by Italy’s State Printing and Mint Institute (Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato). The seal confirms that each bottle can be traced from grove to press.
Toscano EVOO itself has been protected under the Indicazione Geografica Protetta (IGP), or Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), since 1998, a European mark guaranteeing that at least one stage of production or processing takes place in the defined region.

For producers like Tenuta Le Mandorlaie, a small organic estate in the Maremma hills of southern Tuscany, the new label adds commercial value and recognition for their hand-harvested, cold-pressed oils.
Tenuta Le Mandorlaie said that each bottle of certified Tuscan IGP olive oil undergoes “strict inspections by independent certification bodies and the Consorzio di Tutela.”
“These checks cover every stage of production, from the origin of the olives to cold extraction, chemical analysis, and sensory evaluation. Only oils that meet all IGP standards can proudly carry the new official label,” the company said.
